This coming Sunday will be a bittersweet day of excitement and loss. So many of you have expressed your joy about sending us out and at the same time I know that this is a difficult transition for most. I read an article recently titled 10 Ways to Navigate Pastoral Transition that I think you will find helpful. Kelsey and I are eager to go but very sad to leave. God has done so much good work in our lives through GBC; you all will be missed greatly.

  • Brown Church Plant Interest Meetings
For those of you who want to know how you can better pray for us, hear more about what we will be doing, or how you can partner with us, please join us for one of our interest meetings being held at our home.

Easter Sunday is the high point of our calendars. The week leading up to Easter is commonly called "holy week." During holy week believers slow down to meditate on the events leading up to the first Resurrection Sunday. I recommend using your daily devotional time or family worship time to read about and reflect on the Passion of Jesus Christ. Once again, I commend "Morning and Evening Meditations for Holy Week" by Desiring God.

Easter Sunday is coming up fast (April 21st). Someone recently asked me why the date for Easter moves from year-to-year. Each year Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Some years that is as early as March 22nd and other years as late as April 25th. Why this date? Because it coincides with Passover which follows the lunar calendar. Jesus was crucified during the week of Passover and raised on the first day of the following week; Sunday.

We gather for worship each Sunday morning in celebration of the resurrection. Every Sunday is Resurrection Sunday. However, we mark one Sunday each year as a special holiday to emphasize and delight in the resurrection of our Lord.

This year for Easter Sunday, along with the message we will baptize several new believers and a special worship choir will lead us in two songs at the beginning of our service. It's going to be a great day!

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • GBC's Summer Preaching Schedule
I am so proud of our preaching team. Over time the Lord has raised up men in our church (and brought men to our church) who are gifted to preach God's word. Thomas Slawson, Dan Stump, Dave Martin, Eric Wood, Joe Bryant, Mike Dahl, Bob Shilling and Jordan Bradley will be filling the pulpit this summer (June – August). Please pray for these men as they devote themselves to the noble yet weighty task of proclaiming the word of God.

  • GBC Blog
In an effort to keep you up-to-date with the steps that we are taking to call GBC's next lead pastor, the elders will be sharing pertinent information through our church blog. And as always, feel free to contact an elder directly if you have questions. Anthony Perez, Preston Knifong, Thomas Slawson and Joe Bryant are eager to help.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Ang Stump will lead our service, and I will preach Exodus 20:22-24:11. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

Lead Pastor Search

Thomas Slawson

In the recent church update we shared a document laying out the process for calling a new lead pastor. Several people asked what we mean in the document by “Historic Baptist Principles.” In short, historic Baptist principles include,

1. Believer’s baptism by immersion
2. The autonomy of the local church
3. Elder leadership (yes, this is historically Baptist)
4. The Priesthood of All Believers – This has been misused by some liberal/mainline Baptist denominations in the last few decades to defend some unorthodox theological positions, but it’s rooted in the Reformation. It is the conviction that every believer has a responsibility to study, know, and be accountable directly to the word of God. Knowledge and understanding of the word isn’t reserved only for the trained clergy.

I hope this helps clear up any questions. As always, the elders are available to talk if you have any questions or concerns.

-Thomas

I pray that our current series in Exodus has been a blessing. As promised on Sunday HERE is a link to a 2011 series on The Ten Commandments.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Student Ministries Update
This past Sunday we had a parent and student meeting for the youth ministry that was very encouraging. Over 40 people showed up to hear about plans for summer events and the direction of the youth group going forward. Click HERE for a link to the information sheet that was given out regarding the two summer camps we will be involved in. If you have any questions or would like to register for an event please contact Jordan Bradley at jordan@greshambible.org or 360-241-4954.

  • Steps for Life Walk + Run
Please consider being a part of First Image's Steps for Life on May 19th for a 2 mile walk or 5k run. This walk + run is being held at Blue Lake Park and is a fundraiser benefiting First Image and their family programs. Please go HERE for more information or to register. You can also go HERE to watch a short testimonial video. Registration is free up until the day of the event. For day-of registration there is a fee of $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

  • Calling GBC's Next Lead Pastor
Last night the elder finalized the process for calling GBC's next lead pastor. The elders are really close to formally beginning the process. Please remember them in your prayers. (You can also join us on Saturday's for our prayer meetings. 7:30-8:30am in the Study.) Pray for wisdom and pray for a discerning heart. I also want to beseech your patience and understanding. Along with being family men, our elders work demanding jobs: electrician, project manager, creative director, development director. They are busy but will certainly serve GBC well during this season of transition.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, I will lead our service, and Thomas Slawson will preach James 2:1-13. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

After the horrific events in New Zealand you may have wondered, "How should we pray for Muslims?" and "How should I think and feel about this tragedy?". Christianity Today offers us a superb biblical perspective about how Christians should respond to the Christchurch mosque massacre.
