Church Family,

The family and I are enjoying some time away; one last hurrah before school starts. Hopefully, you are able to make good use of the final days of summer. Below is a brief update on the ministry and life of GBC.

Here’s how you can pray for GBC:

  • School has already started for many of our children and will start for many more in the coming weeks. Please pray for smooth transitions and good success for our kids. Also, pray that GBC families will continue to be salt and light in our local schools.
  • Once again, at the start of the school year, we will be giving $50 Office Depot gift cards to the teachers and counselors of Dexter McCarty to purchase school supplies for low income students. Please pray that our generosity would adorn the gospel and glorify Jesus.
  • Our brother Dave Martin is working to enlarge and revamp the deacon team. We are hoping that this ministry will grow in number and in fruitfulness. Please pray for new leaders and a wider reach with the gospel. And by the way, if you aspire to serve, please let us know.

Check out what’s happening in the life of the church:

  • This coming Sunday we will send off Cameron Ell. Cam has enlisted in the United States military and this will be his last Sunday with us for a while.
  • I wanted to mention once more that we have two awesome causes to support in September. The Gateway to the Gorge Race on September 12th and our annual Dexter McCarty school beautification day on September 19th. Details can be found HERE  Please put these events on your calendar.

Our Upcoming Gathering
Lord willing, this coming Sunday our brother Dave Berry will preach an overview sermon on Obadiah.  Please read the text, pray for our gathering, and come ready to worship.

Church Family,

I pray and trust that the Lord is blessing your week. Below is a brief update on the ministry and life of GBC.

Here’s how you can pray for GBC:

  • The steering committee for student ministries has decided to move forward with launching a youth group this fall! We have not yet hired for the position but we are proceeding with a group of dedicated volunteers who will be led by Joe and Kerri Bryant. Please be in prayer about this exciting step.
  • Please remember to pray for our global outreach ministry. You can find lots of good information about the missionaries we support HERE. May the Lord cause the gospel to speed ahead through the Kerrs, Mormances, and Slawsons.

GBC,

Grace and peace.

Prayer Requests

  • The elders will be gathering this Saturday for a day retreat (8am-5pm). We will spend a good portion of our time together in prayer and planning. Some of our agenda items are: strengthening the small group ministry, affiliations with para-church organizations, local outreach, communication (church to us and us to church), family fellowship, and cultivating a culture of prayer. We would so greatly appreciate your prayers for a successful retreat.
  • One of the things that we most look forward to during our retreats is praying through the GBC directory. If you have a specific prayer request that you would like us to pray about, just reply to this email.

Summer Slow Down
To help give refreshment to our teachers and helpers; we will not be having Sprouts, Greenhouse, or Harvest classes during the month of August.

GBC,

Grace and peace.

Prayer Requests

  • Our sister Kathy Rodriguez has been in the hospital for several days due to complications from blood clots. She would appreciate your prayers for recovery. Currently, she is still dealing with shortness of breath issues and a lack of strength and endurance. Please pray for healing and pray that Kathy would regain the strength she needs to return home.
  • Small group leaders, co-leaders, and host homes are gearing up for the start of another small group season. Please pray for Mike Dahl and Joe Bryant who lead this ministry. And pray for all of our group leaders and host homes. Small groups are a vital ministry of the church. Groups help cultivate a culture of disciple in GBC. Pray that our groups would succeed in that mission.

Prayer Requests

  • The elders have a retreat planned for Saturday, August 8th. These retreats provide us with an extended time for prayer, project work, forwarding thinking, and assessment. Please pray for us as we prepare and please pray that our time will be profitable for the building up of GBC.
  • Please continue to pray for the ministry of prayer in our church. We are utterly dependent on the Lord. We demonstrate our need for God, experience intimacy with him, and lay hold of his will for our lives by availing ourselves to prayer. I am convinced that Gresham Bible Church will be as fruitful as we are faithful in prayer.

GBC,

Grace and peace.

Prayer Requests

  • Please continue to pray for the Lord’s help regarding our desire to see prayer become a central part of the life of Gresham Bible Church. We long to experience God’s power and his presence through prayer. Ask the Lord to humble us and to impress upon us our deep need for him.
  • Please pray for open doors for the gospel. Pray that the Lord would use our ministry to bring sinners to salvation. And pray for boldness to speak the gospel.

“Look at the Book” conference  with John Piper
I am very excited about an upcoming conference being hosted by Desiring God Ministries and Good Shepherd Community Church. This “Look at the Book” conference is exactly what it sounds like. It is a conference geared toward getting people into God’s word. Bible interpretation can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be.

Neighborhood Picnic
A great opportunity to serve is coming up for GBC. The neighborhood (Assert) surrounding Dexter McCarty is having their annual BBQ and they need volunteer help. The picnic is Tuesday, Aug 4th at East Gresham Grade School from 5:30-7:00.  They could use help serving, monitoring the food line, etc. This is an event for the whole neighborhood with free food (hot dogs, etc.) and music, plus visits from police and fire personnel. Three or four volunteers would be great.  You could contact Pete for more info at peterschmidtus@yahoo.com.

GBC,

Just a brief update for you this week…

Many thanks to everyone who helped make our church picnic a huge success. It was epic! The extended time of fellowship was sweet and all of our kids had a blast. I’m already looking forward to next year.

If you missed our gathering on this week, I encourage you to listen to Sunday’s message on 2 Corinthians 10. In the sermon I addressed ways that we can think, pray, and respond to the Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex unions. And if you have questions, please send them our way. Also, here is a link to GBC’s position paper on “Marriage and Homosexuality.”

We want your input! We have created a form that invites your share your feedback and ideas about ministry and church life with the elders. Please tell us what helpful input you’ve kept bottled up. We value your thoughts and opinions.

Lord willing, this coming Sunday, our brother Dave Berry will preach Psalm 136. Please read over the passage and pray for our gathering. Here are the lyrics for the songs we’ll be singing during our service
