Gresham Bible Church Update

A few leaders from our church met with the leaders of Powell Valley Church on Friday evening to explore the possibility of GBC acquiring their property. For much of their 127 year history PVC has enjoyed a rich legacy, but in recent years their good reputation has been lost. Knowing this, we have been clear that it is wise and best for their church to dissolve and then donate their assets to GBC. In this scenario Powell Valley would close and GBC would continue as normal but with a great property and a few new people. Over the last few weeks we have (at their urging) engaged in talks about how and if this can actually happen. In the process we have learned more about their church and some of the complexities surrounding enveloping them into GBC. Paramount to the elders is preserving our faithful witness of Jesus Christ. Also we are committed to the health of GBC. In the book, "Better Together" which is about how to unify churches, the author says that when done well 1+1=3 but when done poorly 1+1=0. This only works if it's a win for GBC. We are working to wisely navigate our way through these talks. Also, we are happy to discuss these things further with you. We are holding out hope that this will actually get done, as it would be a wonderful opportunity for GBC. But there is chance that we won't be able to come to terms. Your prayers are appreciated. And we ask that prayer be the primary way that you talk about this possibility, please mostly talk to God about this. We want to refrain from disrespecting Powell Valley or disparaging them in any way.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • Church Camp Out

150 people are already registered for our August 10-12 Camp out. We still have a number of tent/rv sites remaining but cabin and yome sites are all reserved. The early bird deadline is May 21st. Register online.

  • Women's Bible Study
The next women's bible study is Tuesday, May 22nd 7-9pm in The Study.

  • Summer Camp Scholarships (from Emily Prodan)

We are nearing the end of the camp scholarship qualification period. I have still not gotten any applications…and have only had a handful of kids submit service projects for approval. It is really important to know the headcount so we can appropriately allocate funds and send them to the proper camp. Please let me know asap via email (prodan02@gmail.com) or turn in the application page to the offering box. I have gotten some feedback that an extra week would be helpful so I will extend the deadline to Sunday, June 3rd. Finally, we still need donations to the fund to be able to offer up to 50% of the tuition. This is such a huge blessing to our kids and a great investment in their spiritual growth. Please mark your checks "camp scholarship fund". Thank you for your support of our kids!

  • Student Ministries
    (1) NO HS group this Sunday due to Mother’s Day
    (2) Thank you for praying last week and we ask for your continued prayer this week. The students recently finished reading Jesus’ Upper Room Discourse in John 12-17 a total of 53 times for 318 chapters. Now they have turned their attention to Matthew 1-7 and have been challenged to note parallels between Moses and Jesus.

  • GBC Picnic

Mark your calendars for our GBC picnic coming up June 24th at Red Sunset Park.  We need volunteers for food prep, set up, clean up, kids games, and general photography. If you would like to volunteer please email or talk with Noel Rodman or Michelle Waggoner.

Celebrating the life and ministry of Jesus is a regular occurrence in our church. But one week each year is marked as holy. This is the week that we slow down and spend more time meditating on the Passion of Jesus Christ. I recommend skipping ahead a bit in John's Gospel and reading chapters 12-20 for your week's devotions.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Here is how you can pray for GBC and our work in the world

  • Praise God for the achievements of the cross! Let's pray this week that our meditations on Jesus Christ and his cross will awaken sleepy Christians, cause the backslider to regain their first love and encourage the faithful to remain steadfast in their devotion.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • Meals Ministry
For the last 3 1/2 years our sister Marisa Springer has very faithfully served as the lead for our meals ministry. She recently discerned that it was time for her to entrust this joyful task to someone else. Marisa has been a rock star. As many of you have experienced, her leadership has enriched the life of the church and blessed many in our body. Her transition means that we need a new meals lead. If you are interested, please email Noel for more details.

  • Children's Ministry
Parents, please have your kids practice their Easter songs.

By God's grace, hospitality is one of the hallmarks of GBC. Our fellowship with one another helps strengthen our bond of unity. And, when we welcome outsiders we display the love of Christ. The warmth and affection that we show to new people is a powerful witness of Jesus. This trait is always important but even more so as the Lord grows GBC.

Things you can do: be mindful of opportunities to welcome an unfamiliar face, follow up with a contact made in prior weeks, encourage folks to fill out a connection card, volunteer yourself to be a guide to all things GBC, exchange contact information, invite them to the next GBC 101, pray for the Lord to establish them in a healthy local church.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Here is how you can pray for GBC and our work in the world

I have had many occasions to boast about God's work in and through GBC. Our gathering on Sunday gives me yet another opportunity to rejoice in you all. Thank you for the compassion that you showed a new family with disabilities. Already, God has blessed us with a rich diversity of people in our church. All the time we are learning more and more how to love and support others not like ourselves. Thank you for bearing with us.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Gresham Bible Church Update

A titan and spiritual giant has gone home to be with the Lord. Albert Mohler gave a wonderful tribute this morning. Billy Graham was the most effective evangelist of our lifetime. The Lord entrusted him with a global platform and celebrity status, and Billy Graham was faithful to preach the gospel and walk humbly before his God. His life and ministry are an inspiration and a glowing example of godliness and evangelistic zeal. Today, I am saddened by the loss of Billy Graham but rejoicing over God's grace which was made to abound through his ministry.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Here is how you can pray for GBC and our work in the world

  • Throughout Scripture the Lord holds up heroes of the faith (see Hebrews 11). Their examples give us a pattern to follow. Pray this week that the Lord would use the example of a modern hero of the faith, Billy Graham, to encourage us toward greater evangelism.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • Mark Dever March 4th
I am very happy to announce that Dr. Mark Dever will be our speaker on Sunday, March 4th. Mark is the pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington D.C. He is the author of numerous books, the founder of the 9marks ministry, a superb bible expositor and someone who God has used to show me a more excellent way. I am looking forward to having Mark with us.

  • Student Ministry
Thanks to all of you who prayed for Student Ministries this week. We are happy to report that our students read Revelation 19-22, 55 times for a total of 220 chapters! Please continue to ask the Lord to accomplish His work through His Word as the students embark on Jonah this coming week.

  • Automated Offering
If you prefer to automate your giving to GBC, you can do so by signing up with bill pay through your personal bank. All you need is our office mailing address: 123 E. Powell Blvd #207, 97030. You can reach out to Noel with questions.

  • Attention Parents: Internet Safety Seminar
Mark your calendars for Wednesday Feb. 28th, 6:30-8:30 in the Study. We are having a seminar with John Rasmussen on digital media awareness, current trends, and safety. John is a believer and local law enforcement. He has done this seminar numerous times before. As parents, we want to stay ahead of the digital curve and help our children navigate it well. Media changes rapidly and John will help us honor the Lord, steward our kids and be wise.

  • Rescheduled Women's Bible Study: Tuesday, Feb. 27th, GBC study 7-9pm

  • Summer Camp Scholarships
Hello Families! We are happy to announce the beginning of our 2nd Camp Scholarship program! We want to provide an opportunity for more kids to be able to go to summer camp. We have two great Christian camps in our area, Eagle Fern and Trout Creek. Camp is an incredible opportunity to saturate our kids in the word for a whole week while making new friends and learning about Jesus in a new way. It costs about $250 to send one child to camp, and by completing the scholarship program the kids can earn money toward the final cost. Our hope is that more families will be able to send their kids to camp with some of the financial burden lifted. We can’t do this without you. The Lord answered your prayers and blessed our elders' retreat this last Saturday. Thank you for praying for us. It was a great day.

Below is a brief update on the life and ministry of GBC.

Here is how you can pray for GBC and our work in the world

  • Please continue to pray for the families of victims and the larger community impacted by the Florida school shooting. May the Lord comfort the hurting.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • Attention Parents: Internet Safety Seminar

Force of Habit

admin

Written by: Dave Martin

We truly are creatures of habit. Scientists who study human behavior have concluded that

“A habit cannot be extinguished – it can only be replaced.”

A second key observation is this:

All habits consist of a habit loop – cue, routine, and reward.

What does this have to do with Bible reading?

Everything! Armed with these insights on habits and a desire to regularly read the Bible, we can build a simple (not necessarily easy!) strategy to establish a Bible reading habit that will become a way of life.

First, you need a strong “why.”
Why is Bible reading important to you? List all the benefits you believe you will get from it. What will your life look like a year from now, or five years from now, as a result? List all the consequences of not reading regularly. What will your life look like a year from now, or five years from now, if you don’t establish the habit?

Enlist support.

Arrange for accountability with at least two other people. Going it alone is a recipe for failure. You could have a check-in meeting weekly with your partners, or do it with a couple of fellow small-group members at your regular meeting. But it can’t be a casual, optional thing.

Have contingency plans.

You will slip up and miss a day occasionally. Don’t let yourself off the hook. Make up the lost ground quickly and get back on pace; otherwise, you are defeating the purpose of a habit. This is not legalism unless you allow it to be. You are training yourself for the purpose of godliness (1 Timothy 4:7). Be open with your accountability partners – that’s what they’re there for!

Pray.

Realize that there’s a lot at stake, not only in your life, but in the lives of those you can potentially influence. Spiritual warfare is a reality, and Christians with their noses in the Bible are a threat to Satan’s kingdom. But God promises to grant anything we ask according to His will, and so we can pray for His help in this discipline with full assurance that He will strengthen us and teach us.

Now you’re ready to replace a habit. Let’s take a common one: Facebook. First, identify the cue and the reward. What’s your cue for getting on Facebook? Do you do it after dinner? When the kids go down for a nap?
What’s the reward? Every habit has a reward, though we’re not always conscious of it. What do you get out of Facebook? Is it the “likes”? Is it simply the good feeling of knowing what’s going on currently with your friends?

Once you’ve identified the cue and the reward, it’s time to unplug 15 minutes of Facebook from your habit loop and substitute 15 minutes of Bible reading. The cue remains the same. What about the reward? Will the reward be sufficient to keep the behavior going? You may have to experiment with this a bit. There’s nothing wrong with artificially tweaking the reward until the habit has been established. Once the habit is firmly in place, it will run on its own.

Now that you have a plan, write it down in the form of an intention statement, like this:

“From now on, when I                                                        (cue),

I will  read the Bible for 15 minutes (routine) in order to

                                                        (reward).”

Here are some things from around the internet that we found interesting and insightful.

“The Supreme Court may or may not do their job. We must make sure, no matter what, that we do ours.”
Just today the U.S. Supreme Court announced it will be hearing cases on the constitutional right of same-sex marriage. This is an important development, and in this piece Russell Moore offers some helpful perspective for how we as Christians should respond, whatever the outcome of the ruling.

Lecrae, John Piper, and John Ensor

In this moving video, Christian rapper Lecrae sits down with John Piper and John Ensor, the president of the pro-life group, Passion Life Ministries. The focus is on the topic of abortion, but they touch on several other things too.

The Things of Earth Will Grow Strangely Bright
Piper writes a few brief thoughts, endorsing a new book by Joe Rigney, on how to enjoy the good things God has created… like bacon. The short video is really good too.

Here is a two-part interview with Randy Alcorn on the topics of his recent book, Hand in Hand: The Beauty of God’s Sovereignty and Meaningful Human Choice.

Part 1: Randy Alcorn on Calvinists, Arminians, and Everything in Between

Part 2: Embracing the Holy Tension between God’s Sovereignty and Human Choice

A Deeper Well of Joy
This is a review and commendation of a new book about joy by Margaret Feinberg.

A New Convert’s Guide To Understanding Christian Code Words
This one is just for fun. Many of us have probably used this kind of jargon, or “Christianese”. I know I have.

The Bible is More than Stories of Morality
This post addresses the question, “Is it possible to teach Bible stories without teaching the Bible story?” (One thing I really appreciate about our Children’s Ministry leadership is their desire to teach our kids the whole story of Scripture.)

Why the Church Needs Intergenerational Friendships
This is an insightful post on the benefit of relationships in the church that span age groups.

Faithful with Fifteen Minutes
This post gives some good perspective on the significance of regular Bible reading, even if it’s just for a short time each day.
