Thank you all for a wonderful send off this last Sunday. Our family was overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. It has been an absolute privilege to serve alongside you in ministry and to do life together over the last 12 years. You have shared in our highs and in our lows, you have prayed for us, befriended us, supported us and served us. We will always look back fondly on our time with GBC.

In the coming days and weeks your elders and deacons and staff will need your prayers and support. Please ask God to give them spiritual strength to trust in Christ and to lead by faith. Pray also for the preaching team as they fill the pulpit this summer. And pray for the process of calling GBC's next lead pastor. May the Lord give wisdom and grace to you all.

Easter Sunday is the high point of our calendars. The week leading up to Easter is commonly called "holy week." During holy week believers slow down to meditate on the events leading up to the first Resurrection Sunday. Gresham Bible Church Update

Easter Sunday is coming up fast (April 21st). Someone recently asked me why the date for Easter moves from year-to-year. Each year Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Some years that is as early as March 22nd and other years as late as April 25th. Why this date? Because it coincides with Passover which follows the lunar calendar. Jesus was crucified during the week of Passover and raised on the first day of the following week; Sunday.

We gather for worship each Sunday morning in celebration of the resurrection. Every Sunday is Resurrection Sunday. However, we mark one Sunday each year as a special holiday to emphasize and delight in the resurrection of our Lord.

This year for Easter Sunday, along with the message we will baptize several new believers and a special worship choir will lead us in two songs at the beginning of our service. It's going to be a great day!

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • GBC's Summer Preaching Schedule
I am so proud of our preaching team. Over time the Lord has raised up men in our church (and brought men to our church) who are gifted to preach God's word. Thomas Slawson, Dan Stump, Dave Martin, Eric Wood, Joe Bryant, Mike Dahl, Bob Shilling and Jordan Bradley will be filling the pulpit this summer (June – August). Please pray for these men as they devote themselves to the noble yet weighty task of proclaiming the word of God.

  • GBC Blog
In an effort to keep you up-to-date with the steps that we are taking to call GBC's next lead pastor, the elders will be sharing pertinent information through our church blog. And as always, feel free to contact an elder directly if you have questions. Anthony Perez, Preston Knifong, Thomas Slawson and Joe Bryant are eager to help.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Ang Stump will lead our service, and I will preach Exodus 20:22-24:11. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

(You can also join us on Saturday's for our prayer meetings. 7:30-8:30am in the Study.) Pray for wisdom and pray for a discerning heart. I also want to beseech your patience and understanding. They are busy but will certainly serve GBC well during this season of transition.

During tonight's member meeting I made an exciting and sorrowful announcement about my family following the call of God to plant a new church in N/NE Portland. Our dear brother and sister Kyle and Katie Cowan responded to the appeal for the placement of twin two year-old boys by opening their hearts and home to care for children in their distress. The Cowan's kindness is not due to having tons of extra space and plenty of surplus energy and time (they both work and have 4 bio children). They have inconvenienced themselves and taken on emergency placement because the gospel of Jesus Christ compels them to do so. We rejoice over God's work in their lives.

Please pray for the Cowan's spiritual and emotional strength. Pray for the transition for their children and the two foster children in their care. And pray that GBC's orphan care will continue to adorn the gospel by serving those in need and spreading the fame of Jesus Christ.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Daylight savings ends this coming Sunday, March 10th. Don't forget to set your clocks 1 hour forward on Saturday night.

  • Important Member Meeting this coming Sunday, 3:30-5:30pm in The Study
If you are a member of GBC or considering membership with GBC, we (the elders) ask that you plan to attend the Member Meeting. During the meeting you will receive ministry updates, we will take in new members, and talk about the direction of GBC. Snacks provided and children are welcome.

  • Homeless Resource Bags
Homeless Resource Bags are now available to pick up at the Resource Table on Sunday mornings. They contain food, hygiene items, the Gospel of John, and local homeless resource information. Two sizes are available: snack or gallon (meal) size. Please help distribute them in our community as you encounter people with a need.  And a special thanks to the Jr. High and High School youth groups for assembling them!

  • Student Ministry Parent info/welcome meeting
Parents and students please plan to join us for an informal meeting on March 24th directly after service in the Orchard room. We will get to meet Jordan Bradley and talk about what is coming up in Student Ministries. This will be about a 30 minute meeting.

  • Easter Family Worship Choir
We’ll be having a Family Worship Choir for Easter this year (April 21st). There will be two Saturday rehearsals (4/13 & 4/20, 9-11AM) in addition to receiving the music and a practice MP3 at home. The choir is open to children in the Sprouts class on up. Children under 12 years old will need a parent/guardian to join with them. For more information and to sign up online, follow this link.
Sign up sheets are also available at the Children’s Ministry Check-In table and the Resource Table at church. Sign-ups need to be submitted by March 17th.

  • GBC August Family Day
Flexibility and diversity are values we like to champion at GBC. We know the church camp out is a favorite event of the year, so why are we doing a one-day event this year instead?

    1. We’ve had a difficult time finding a location that can accommodate those with accessibility needs.
    2. Putting together a camp out every year requires a lot of coordination and volunteers. Conscious of the time and high amount of volunteers that are needed we would like to move the camp out to every other year.
    3. A whole weekend away for a family costs more than a one day event.

At GBC we want to be inclusive of those that have accessibility needs and be conscious of the time and cost it takes to put together a camp out. This year, GBC is planning a One-Day Family Event. We'll have many of the same types of activities that we’ve grown to love about the camp out: kid’s activities and games, group games, hang out time, dinner together as a church, a worship service, and a talent show. It will just be one day instead of a whole weekend. Thank you for being flexible as we try something different this year. And we look forward to alternating these events going forward!

We are putting together a committee to pull off this new and fun event. If you would like to be involved please contact Noël Rodman.

    Our Upcoming Gathering
Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Amy will lead our service and I will preach Exodus 13:17-15:21. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

Pray for our retreat worship team: Jenn Hudson, Anneliese Autry and Becca Kinser who have been working hard to be sure our time spent singing is beautiful, draws our hearts closer to Jesus and above all that it honors the Lord.
Pray for me and our WM leadership team: (Lynsey Bock, Ann Stump, Cristy Slawson, Faith Hardin and Jenn Hudson) as we make the final preparations and nail down all the details, large and small.
Pray for the weather! We won't cancel unless the mountain passes are all closed, but it would be nice not to have to worry about snow in 2 weeks! Sunshine would also be amazing, so pray for that too 🙂

Gresham Bible Church Update

I know that like me, many of you are planning to watch the Super Bowl. If you are hosting a party or simply gathering with family, consider screening 2 or 3 Football Sunday videos. The NFL players in these videos have really strong testimonies that will encourage you and could be useful for planting seeds with unbelievers and sparking a conversation about Jesus Christ.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Children's Ministry February Verse Card

  • Student Ministry
No High School Group this Sunday, February 3rd. Will resume Feb 10th.

  • Women's Retreat
The deadline to register AND to pay for the retreat is February 10. Please don't wait a minute longer! Here's the link to register online. Also, remember you can mail a check to the church office (123 E Powell Blvd. Suite 207, Gresham, 97030), or use Venmo to transfer money (search for Gresham Bible Church). Of course you can also put a check in the offering box on Sunday…just don't forget 🙂

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Warren Kinser will lead our service and I will preach Exodus chapters 3-4. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

This coming Sunday we will launch a new series in the Old Testament book of Exodus. I am really excited to walk through this theologically rich and immensely practical study with you all. As a primer, take ten minutes or so to watch The Bible Project videos on the book of Exodus. And as always, please pray for me and the ministry of the word. Pray for fruitful study and power in preaching.

Gresham Bible Church Update

We are commanded to pray for our government. We ought to pray for our leaders because Romans 13:1 tells us that the authorities that exist have been established by God. God brings order to our world by establishing authority structures. Also, we should pray for our leaders because 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us that the good success of our rulers blesses our lives. Desiring to see a leader fail is like boarding a plane and hoping it crashes. Lastly, we should pray for our leaders because 1 Peter 2:17 tells us to honor the emperor. It is socially acceptable to bash authority. Commonly, the target of our contempt is the person in authority over us. But Christians should not live like the world. There is a place for speaking truth to power but that is the exception and not the rule. Believers should be marked by an appreciation for and submission to authority; knowing that ultimately God stands behind it. I have my share of grievances with our current president; but I pray for him and desire to see his good plans succeed. My speech about him and others in authority over me is mostly directed to God and about their good. I find that doing so helps me give appropriate honor to our rulers.
