Gresham Bible Church Update

admin

It was great to work alongside GBC’ers and others serving during last weekend’s Compassion mini clinic. 60 volunteers from 5 churches came together to serve 69 guests. The clinic provided: medical care, dental care, vision care, chiropractic, haircuts, and health plan assistance. Thank you for praying and for serving!

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • NEW PA OF STUDENT MINISTRY!!
I am very happy to announce that Jordan Bradley will be our next Student Ministry leader. After a lot of prayer and careful consideration, the student ministries search committee was delighted to recommend Jordan for the job. I made the offer this week and Jordan and his lovely wife Taylor excitedly accepted. Click HERE to view his resume. Jordan will start early March.

  • CHRISTMAS BRUNCH THIS SUNDAY
Oh man, it’s almost brunch Sunday. The Christmas brunch is an annual highlight. Please remember that our kids have big appetites after church and that we invite visitors to stay for the brunch following the service. All that to say, please bring bountiful dishes to share. Below are dish suggestions by last name.
    A-H – Egg Dish
    J-R – Potato Dish
    S-Z – Fruit/Pastry Dish
Please do not bring any items containing nuts or nutmeg.
**We are in need of volunteers for set up and clean up. Email Michelle Waggoner to sign up.

  • END-OF-YEAR GIVING
As 2018 comes to a close, I want to ask you to consider giving a generous gift to Gresham Bible Church. Your generosity funds God’s purposes in and through GBC and stores up treasure in our eternal 401(k). All gifts must be received or postmarked by December 31st.

  • OPERATIONS
The vision of our operations ministry is to create a welcoming environment for outsiders and a worshipful environment for insiders. Each week guys in our church show up early and stay late, setting up and tearing down. This is not a spotlight ministry so it’s easy to forget just how essential operations is to the overall ministry of the church. Please join me in showing appreciation for the men who serve us all each Sunday.

  • CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
Due to shortened class time in Greenhouse on up, memory verses can be said to Lisa or Megan immediately after service this week!
Also, our GBC kids who are in Greenhouse on up will be singing Dec 23rd! Only Nursery & Seeds will have class that day.

  • STUDENT MINISTRY
    Outreach Event

We will assemble the boxes at 1pm with cookies and a flyer invitation to our Christmas service on December 23rd. The students will then be driven by a GBC adult to the neighborhood around Dexter to hand them out. Students will be back to the study by 3pm for pickup.

    Christmas Parties
High School – December 16th, 630-8pm. Wear your fun Christmas favorites like hats, socks, scarves or sweaters. Bring a $5 wrapped gift to exchange, white elephant style (a fun gift someone would enjoy). There will be Christmas treats and pizza! This coming Sunday marks the beginning of advent. In advent, we look forward to our Savior’s second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. In this season we keep in mind both “advents” of Christ, the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come. Follow this LINK to read why and how we practice advent.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

Email Noel to receive a copy of the latest church directory. There are 345 souls to lift up in prayer and to become more familiar with.

  • Compassion Clinic
Please be praying for the December 8th Compassion Clinic in Gresham. This is a sweet opportunity to show Christ's love for our neighbors. Pray that along with alleviating basic needs, that the hearts of those served will be warmed toward God. There is still space if you would like to volunteer. Email Jenn Hudson if you are interested.

About 1/3 of the Psalms are songs/prayers of lament. There is a book of the Bible called Lamentations. God expects and encourages us to cast our burdens upon him because he cares for us. The Lord also expects that even in difficult times that we will have grateful hearts. I recently read an excellent article from our friends at Eternal Perspective Ministries on "The Blessing of Gratitude, the Curse of Complaining." As we approach Thanksgiving, consider this 12 point cure for complaining. Because of God's goodness we have many reasons to give thanks.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Children's Ministry News
Christmas Performance! Come hear our GBC kids sing on December 23rd! This will include our students in Greenhouse, Orchard, and Harvest. (Sprouts will join in the Easter performance.)
Advent! Our resource table will have sample Advent resources for you to review this week! Click here to see a list of Advent Resources!
Dreaming! Children’s ministry is praying for some small group leaders to serve once a month! We also would love to add a teacher to our team! Interested? Email Lisa or Megan OR talk to us Sunday!

  • Women's Ministry News
Christmas party! Join us for our Christmas party on Saturday December 1st at 6:30pm at Courtney Willard's house. Please RSVP and read the details on Evite, because it's an ornament AND a cookie exchange! (Remember, NO NUTS or NUTMEG in your cookies) Even if you're unable or don't want to bring anything, come anyway 🙂
Abide Study Celebration! Over 50 of us are nearing the end of our 123 John study, "Abide" and I want all of our groups to celebrate together when we're done! Join us for breakfast on Saturday December 15, from 8:30-10am in The Study (GBC office, suite 110). I'll provide the food and coffee.

I really missed being with you all on Sunday. Thank you for your prayers. Like many of you, I am very grateful for the elders of GBC. They not only serve you faithfully, but they have been a pillar of support for me and my family. What you saw on Sunday during the morning gathering, and the afternoon member meeting, is what I get to have a front row seat to week in and week out. Also, props to Mike Dahl for doing an incredible job moderating the panel.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • GBC 101 on Dec 2nd 12:30-2:30pm in the Study
GBC 101 is a 2 hour class that serves as an on ramp into the life of the GBC. During the class I talk about the most important aspects of GBC and share the mission and direction of the church. Additionally, there is plenty of space to field your questions. Please RSVP to Noel if you would like to attend.

  • New-ish Addition
We rejoice with Mike and Carrie Dahl in finalization of their adoption of their daughter Evelyn. The Dahl Family would like to invite their church family to a dessert open house celebrating their adoption of Evelyn Elia.

Dec 2nd from 2-5pm at the Dahl’s home.
32751 SE Bluff Rd, Boring OR 97009
Please RSVP to Carrie at (503) 484-7732 or carriealynn@yahoo.com
  • Student Ministry – Thanksgiving Break
    No Jr. High on 11/19
    No High School on 11/25

  • Women's Ministry
Online sign ups are available on the website here.

  • Follow-up on Marriage
By God's grace we have a number of strong healthy marriages in our church. The Lord has given us lots of good examples to follow. If you are wondering who those people are, I would happy to get you paired up. Also, I wanted to remind you that GBC offers a marriage enrichment program. Sometimes Christian marriages need a tune-up. If you think your marriage would benefit from a 4-6 week individualized program, just reply to this email and we will get you set up.

  • Pressing Needs Cider Press Follow-up
We had a fantastic adoption fundraiser this year. The cider press event raised $9,550. Thank you GBC for all your hard work!

    Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc will lead us in music, Preston will lead our service and Thomas Slawson will preach James 1:19-27. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

I am very much looking forward to our member meeting this coming Sunday. We have a very full agenda. The elders are happy to speak with you before or after the member meeting about any of the agenda items, but we will not be able to allow space for questions during the meeting. Here is the agenda rundown:

  • Why member meetings matter
  • Ministry Updates (Women's Ministry and Children's Ministry)
  • Introduce 20 new members
  • 3rd quarter financial report
  • GBC calendar and scheduling
  • Deacon ministry update
  • Why and how we practice church discipline
  • Pastoral Assistant search update
  • 2018-19 GBC directory
  • Worship and Creed

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Pittsburgh Shooting
I want to commend a superb article by Russell Moore that was written in response to the deadliest attack on Jewish people in American history, If You Hate Jews, You Hate Jesus. Moore does a great job of showing how the Jewish heritage of Jesus is an important part of our redemption story.

  • Chinese Pilots
A few GBC families have spent the past few years serving Chinese pilot students in Troutdale. China is becoming increasingly hostile toward the gospel so it is a great opportunity to have them here in America for 1-2 years of training. There are a lot of students who aren't matched up with a volunteer family and we'd love to get those young men into Christian homes to experience Thanksgiving in a loving and hospitable environment. If anyone is able to welcome a few of these students to their holiday gathering, please contact Kerry and Josie Sinclair at kerry-josie@juno.com or 503-251-4779

  • Student Ministry
Middle school group is taking the next 2 Mondays off. It will resume Nov 26th. The time will also be changing to 6:30-8pm for the remainder of the school year.

  • Save the date
Dexter McCarty teacher appreciation meal – November 19th. Follow this link to sign up to bring something.
Women's Ministry Christmas party – December 1st. Click on the link to see the Evite.
    GBC 101 – Sunday December 2nd, 12:30-2:30pm – Email Noel to RSVP
Christmas Brunch – Sunday December 16th immediately following the morning service

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc will lead us in music, Thomas Slawson will lead our service and the elders and our wives will share from God's word on the roles of husbands and wives. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text (Ephesians 5:21-33)

The next four weeks in our study of Ephesians will center on the Christian home. The first two weeks will focus on marriage. GBC holds a biblical view of marriage and gender. I recommend reading GBC's position paper on Marriage and Homosexuality as a primer.

Thank you so much for your hard work and generosity; the Cider Press was a huge success! We made a lot of cider, we raised a lot of money for adoptive families, and we had a great time working alongside each other.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Member Meeting – Sunday, November 11th 4-6pm, The Study
I am very much looking forward to our next member meeting. Lord willing, we will take in about 20 new members, you'll hear ministry updates from staff & leaders, I will share about an exciting opportunity to enlarge our flex space and we will sing together and confess our church creed. For members these meetings are a big deal. Please save the space on your calendar and make plans to attend. I trust that the meeting will be unifying and edifying.

  • Love & Respect DVD series
We have a lot of resources in the office that you are welcome to borrow, but we do eventually need them back. Presently, we have a small group that would like to use GBC's "Love & Respect" DVD series. If you by chance have it, please return it to Noel at your earliest convenience.

We will be taking directory photos this coming Sunday! Pictures will be taken in Dexter's gym before service (930-1030am) and after service (12-1pm). Please plan on getting your families picture taken for our GBC Directory. The church directory is an important tool for community life. Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • An effort to foster community
Beginning this coming Sunday we are going to delay tear-down by 5 minutes to allow for lingering after the benediction. Once you're dismissed, a timer will begin on the screen with slides running in the background. When time has run out and the music starts, the carts will appear and we will ask for your help putting away the chairs. Your assistance with the chairs is a huge help to the operations team. We hope that over time this small change will have a big impact in the community life of the church. The time could be used for: further reflection on the service, prayer, and conversation.

  • Children's Ministry
We are having a Jr. Helper meeting 9-10am on Sunday, Sept. 30th. If you are a student and helping in Children’s Ministry, please attend this meeting! We’ll be providing valuable training for some specific ways to help in class. There will be snacks!

On Sunday, I presented Preston Knifong to you as an elder candidate for GBC. Preston has been in the elder process for 1 year. During that time Anthony Perez, Thomas Slawson and myself have observed his godly character and his zeal for serving the church. We invite the congregation to be a part of the process of recognizing church elders. Please follow this link to Preston's elder recognition form. There you can learn a bit more about Preston and affirm the biblical traits that mark him as a man qualified to serve as your elder. You can mail that form to the church office or scan and email that form to me. We will also have them available on the resource table on Sunday.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • New Additions
The Lord blessed Warren and Becca Kinser with a beautiful baby boy, Noah John.
God also gave the Slawson's a beautiful baby boy, Stephen Wesley Duncan.

  • Small Groups sign ups are this Sunday 9/9

  • Exploring the Great Commission Discipleship Class
If you claim the name of Jesus, you have been given a royal commission that, if accepted, will lead to a life more demanding and more rewarding than any other. In this 8-week journey we will engage such questions as:

    • What is the Gospel?

    • What is the difference between a Christian and a disciple?

    • What is the Kingdom of God, and why did Jesus talk so much about it?

    • If the Gospel is supernatural, what about the gap I see between my normal life and the Christian life portrayed in the Bible?

    • What are spiritual disciplines, and is it possible to see them more as a delight than a duty?

    • How can I become more effective in reaching lost people with the Good News of Jesus?

The class will meet weekly on Tuesday nights starting October 2nd 730-9pm. It will end with a Friday evening and Saturday day-long evangelism training workshop. You will also be given the opportunity to continue in a discipleship "micro-group," being transformed and equipped by God's Word and God's Spirit to be a reproducing disciple-maker in obedience to Jesus' Commission. See Dave Martin for more details.

  • Student Ministries
Sunday, Sept 9th is our combined Fall kick off for both MS & HS ministries at the Riegelmann’s, 6:30-8:30pm.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Our Community Care Day was fantastic! Working side-by-side to beautify Dexter McCarty's campus was a delight and the event was a good opportunity to display Christ's love for our community.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • "Don't be a Pharisee"
The Pharisees are the bad guys of the gospels, but maybe not for the reason you think. I read a superb article in Christianity Today about the real reason Jesus confronted the Pharisees. Definitely worth a read. You can find it here.

  • Small Groups
Group sign-ups will start Sunday, September 9th. If you are interested in leading a group, co-leading a group, or being a host home; please contact Anthony Perez.

  • Encourage a Teacher
We could use your help writing words of encouragement to Dexter McCarty teachers. Each year we give DMMS faculty a $50 gift card to Office Depot along with a note from GBC. Practically, the gift helps provide for classroom needs. Relationally, we hope that our generosity will have an eternal impact for the kingdom of God. Thank you cards will be available on the back stage this Sunday.

  • Deacon Installation!
This coming Sunday we will be installing 5 new deacons; praise God! We will lay hands on: Bryan and Chris McClelland, Jason and Lynsey Bock, and Brett Hooper.

  • SAFETY UPDATE
The backstage will NO longer be available for seating. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Children's Ministry
GBC is blessed with LOTS of kids! In order to serve them well, we are in need of 3 nursery helpers to properly fill our fall schedule. This is a once per month commitment. Please contact Lisa or Megan this week if you would like to join the team!
Also, this is the final week of kids in service! We have coloring sheets and clip boards available at the back table!

  • GBC 101
September 9th, 12:30-2:30pm in the Study. Lunch is provided. Children are welcome. RSVP to Noel Rodman to attend.

  • Student Ministries
Both Jr. High and High School will kick off on Sunday September 9th at the Riegelmann's. Also, in case you missed it, here is Dave's announcement about candidating for senior pastor with Flagstaff Christian Fellowship. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Thomas will lead us in music, Preston Knifong will lead our service and I will preach Proverbs 1:1-7 "Get Wisdom." Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

Personal Update from Dave Berry

Dear GBC,

I wanted to take a moment to share a personal update. Through a unique turn of providences, and with the elders’ blessing, I have been in conversation with a church in Flagstaff, Arizona searching for a Senior Pastor.

By all accounts, this is an amazing opportunity for the Gospel. Not only in fostering greater health in a local church, but also uniquely discipling and sending out both seasonal residents and college students.

Flagstaff Christian Fellowship, has selected me as their top candidate and is flying my family out Aug 15. The purpose of the visit is to take the final steps in getting to know one another and see if the Lord is truly leading the Berry’s to this new ministry assignment.

The Lord has filled my heart with great joy and satisfaction while serving our students. My family continues to be abundantly blessed by GBC and we have grown in so many ways. Should the Lord lead us to FCF, we are eager to “transplant” those blessings to others.

To be clear, an official position has not been offered to me. The congregation will vote on Sun, September 9th at which point I will be notified of their decision. But, it seems the Lord is in this and things will move forward.

There are many moving parts and hearts involved in this process. It is bittersweet to be sure. Please pray for all and for wisdom, discernment, courage, and unity. Most importantly, for the Lord to be glorified and His will to be done. – Dave Berry

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc will lead us in music, Lynsey Bock will lead our service and Dan Stump will preach Matthew 6:25-34. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

My kids have been looking forward to our church campout since the conclusion of the last campout. Kelsey and I are also eagerly anticipating a rich time of fellowship with new and established GBC’ers. Additionally, we are upping our camping game this year: we got a griddle and descent chairs. No tent yet but we have moved from a cabin to a yome (progress).

Campout Details

  • Click HERE to view our GBC Campout Schedule. It contains pertinent information about check-in/out and details about weekend activities.

  • Bee Allergies! Promontory is experiencing an increase in bees this year. While they are taking measures to combat this problem, please make sure you are prepared if you or a family member has a bee allergy.

  • Keep an eye on the forecast as the day approaches! There is currently an expectation of rain on Saturday morning. Come prepared! – From PGE Parks

  • Promontory Park is situated next to a beautiful reservoir that provides opportunities for swimming and boating and other water activities. Please be advised that there are no lifeguards on duty and GBC does not provide water monitors or lifeguards.

  • There are still a couple of sites left if you are interested in attending. Contact Noel.

Each year we have the opportunity to serve our community by beautifying the Dexter McCarty campus. This year, as in the past, we will be pulling weeds, trimming bushes, edging walkways and spreading bark. Our Community Care Day is Saturday, August 18th 8-10am. This is great way to display the love of Christ for our community. Please save the date and plan to attend. Sign up sheets will be available on Sunday, or sign up with Noel Rodman.

Here is what's happening in the life of the church

  • Campout
No Sunday morning service on August 12th at Dexter McCarty. Instead, join us on August 11th, Saturday evening at Promontory Park, (40600 OR-224, Estacada, OR 97023) for our worship gathering starting with a pizza dinner at 5pm.

  • Global Outreach
Come meet pastor Stas Efimov from the Russian region of Yakutia, Sunday, August 19th from 6pm-8pm at the Slawsons' home, 4180 SE Hillyard Rd, Gresham. Pastor Efimov will be sharing in English about his ministry in this vast remote part of Siberia where winter temperatures can drop to -65˚F and even lower. We'll also be enjoying some authentic Russian desserts along with coffee, tea and other refreshments. Email Thomas Slawson to R.S.V.P.
