Gresham Bible Church Update

admin

I am very excited that we have reached the final stages of the elder process with Joe Bryant. Click HERE to access the elder recognition form. The elder recognition form is a way for the elders to measure consensus among the body and it's an opportunity for members to affirm Joe's godly character and demonstrated service to GBC. We ask that members fill out the form and place it in the offering box or mail it to the church office or scan and email it to vergil@greshambible.org.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Baptism Class – March 17th
Directly after service in the Orchard Room. Our baptism service will be April 21st, Easter Sunday.

  • Job Opening
InterAct Ministries is looking for a servant-hearted, missions-minded individual to be our next finance director to work in our U.S. office in Boring. • Compassion Gresham Clinic
We are excited to partner once again with Compassion Connextion. Our next Gresham clinic is March 9th from 10am-2pm. To volunteer contact Jenn Hudson.

  • Prayer for our Women's retreat – From Ang
"Pray that the Holy Spirit would be preparing our hearts for what He has to teach us. Pray for our speakers, that they would be faithful to speak truth and grace. Pray for our worship team, that they would help us to turn our eyes upon Jesus and lay our burdens at His feet. Pray for all the details to come together. But mostly pray that God would be honored by all that happens, and that all of our hearts would be drawn closer to Him and each other this weekend."

  • Member Meeting March 10th
If you are a member of GBC or considering membership with GBC, we (the elders) ask that you plan to attend our next Member Meeting on March 10th, 3:30-5:30pm. I greatly missed being with you all on Sunday. Hopefully, the snow day was refreshing. Looking forward to our gathering this coming Lord's Day.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Compassion Gresham Clinic
We are excited to partner once again with Compassion Connect. Our next Gresham clinic is March 9th. To volunteer or with questions, contact Jenn Hudson.

  • Joe Bryant Elder Recognition
I am so pleased to announce that our brother Joe Bryant has reached the final stage of the process to become an elder with GBC. This coming Sunday we will present Joe to you for recognition. Your bulletin will include an elder recognition form insert. We ask that members fill out the form and place it in the offering box or mail it to the church office or scan and email it to vergil@greshambible.org.

  • Prayer Request for Women's Retreat from Ang Stump
Pray for our speakers: Cristy Slawson, Bridget Botts and Sandy Brumbelow as they testify to what the Lord has done in their lives, and Sandy Snavely as she brings us a concluding word (from the Word) that will tie these 3 messages together before we leave on Sunday.
Pray for our retreat worship team: Jenn Hudson, Anneliese Autry and Becca Kinser who have been working hard to be sure our time spent singing is beautiful, draws our hearts closer to Jesus and above all that it honors the Lord.
Pray for me and our WM leadership team: (Lynsey Bock, Ann Stump, Cristy Slawson, Faith Hardin and Jenn Hudson) as we make the final preparations and nail down all the details, large and small.
Pray for the weather! We won't cancel unless the mountain passes are all closed, but it would be nice not to have to worry about snow in 2 weeks! Sunshine would also be amazing, so pray for that too 🙂

  • Member Meeting March 10th
If you are a member of GBC or considering membership with GBC, we (the elders) ask that you plan to attend our next Member Meeting on March 10th, 3:30-5:30pm. I know that like me, many of you are planning to watch the Super Bowl. If you are hosting a party or simply gathering with family, consider screening 2 or 3 Football Sunday videos. The NFL players in these videos have really strong testimonies that will encourage you and could be useful for planting seeds with unbelievers and sparking a conversation about Jesus Christ.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Children's Ministry February Verse Card

  • Student Ministry
No High School Group this Sunday, February 3rd. Will resume Feb 10th.

  • Women's Retreat
The deadline to register AND to pay for the retreat is February 10. Please don't wait a minute longer! Here's the link to register online. Also, remember you can mail a check to the church office (123 E Powell Blvd. Suite 207, Gresham, 97030), or use Venmo to transfer money (search for Gresham Bible Church). Of course you can also put a check in the offering box on Sunday…just don't forget 🙂

This coming Sunday we will launch a new series in the Old Testament book of Exodus. I am really excited to walk through this theologically rich and immensely practical study with you all. As a primer, take ten minutes or so to watch The Bible Project videos on the book of Exodus. And as always, please pray for me and the ministry of the word. Pray for fruitful study and power in preaching.

We are commanded to pray for our government. We ought to pray for our leaders because Romans 13:1 tells us that the authorities that exist have been established by God. God brings order to our world by establishing authority structures. Also, we should pray for our leaders because 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us that the good success of our rulers blesses our lives. Desiring to see a leader fail is like boarding a plane and hoping it crashes. Lastly, we should pray for our leaders because 1 Peter 2:17 tells us to honor the emperor. It is socially acceptable to bash authority. Commonly, the target of our contempt is the person in authority over us. But Christians should not live like the world. There is a place for speaking truth to power but that is the exception and not the rule. Believers should be marked by an appreciation for and submission to authority; knowing that ultimately God stands behind it. I have my share of grievances with our current president; but I pray for him and desire to see his good plans succeed. My speech about him and others in authority over me is mostly directed to God and about their good. I find that doing so helps me give appropriate honor to our rulers.

I pray that this email finds you rejoicing in the hope of your calling.  Just a brief update this week.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Financial Peace University begins February 17th
We are excited to once again offer FPU. Rocky and Kathy Rodriguez will lead this 9-week course that specializes in helping people manage God's money wisely. For families, I have learned that paying down debt and building up savings is secondary to creating unity in marriage. There are lots of practical benefits to FPU but I think the biggest takeaway from the course is unifying the family around a common vision which is aided by giving money a purpose. Email Noel to sign up.

  • 2018 Giving Statements
Noel is hard at work preparing your 2018 giving statements. Your statements will be sent through postage mail and should be received by the end of the month.

  • Student Ministries
Next week, we will resume our regular schedule with High School group meeting Sunday January 13th, 630-8pm and Middle School meeting on Monday January 14th, 630-8pm.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Amy Lyda will lead our service and Mike Dahl will preach Psalm 115. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

Happy New Year! I pray that this calendar year will be marked by God's faithfulness and your continued growth and joy in Jesus Christ. Charles Spurgeon's devotional from 1 Samuel 7:12 "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us" is one that I often return to at the start of a new year. Be encouraged that God is with you and will be your help in 2019.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Benevolence
The GBC Benevolence Ministry has become aware of some significant practical needs for a family new to our church:
    1.  A working generator, theirs is broken. They live in an old trailer.
    2.  A working refrigerator, theirs is broken. They are using a cooler.
    3.  Housing rental for lower rent. Both parents are employed but they qualify for no assistance and have a prior eviction due to unsustainable rise in rent.
If you are in the position of helping out with any of the above needs, please contact Kathy Rodriguez.

  • Condolences for the Rau's
Dave Rau's father, Jay, is now in the presence of his Savior. Please pray for Dave and Beth's comfort. Also, you are invited to show your support for the Rau's at Jay's memorial service next Friday, January 11th at 1:30pm @ Good Shepherd Community Church.

  • Women's Ministry News
Save the date for our first bible study of 2019, January 29th, 7-9pm in the Study.
Our women's retreat is February 22-24, sign-up online here.

  • Student Ministries Winter Break
High School will resume January 13th, 630-8pm and Jr. High will resume January 14th, 630-8pm.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Danny Nedelisky will lead us in music, Thomas Slawson will lead our service and I will preach Luke 11:1-13. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

I trust that your hearts were filled with the joy of Jesus Christ on Christmas day. Our family travelled to Tucson, AZ to be with my parents and my brother's family for the holiday. Along with enjoying family, we plan to be with Dave and Rachael Berry at Flagstaff Christian Fellowship this coming Sunday.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • End-of-year giving
Thank you for your faithful support of GBC throughout the year. Once again we rejoice in the Lord's good provision through your generosity. As 2018 comes to a close and as you reflect on God's kindness, consider making an investment in GBC. Please remember that 2018 giving must received or postmarked by December 31st.

  • Thank you Bethany Nedelisky!!
A huge shout out to Bethany Nedelisky and all our GBC kids for a wonderful Christmas program!! It was a delight to watch!

Once again Michelle Waggoner and a wonderful team of volunteers did a superb job of coordinating our annual Christmas Brunch. Many thanks to everyone who helped. And thank you all for bringing a great spread.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • The Persecution of Chinese Christians
I wept and rejoiced as I read Pastor Wang Yi's powerful response to the ongoing persecution of Christians in China. This man's faith is a gift to us all. His declaration is a great example of what it means to live in the kingdom of this world while serving and waiting for the kingdom of heaven.

  • Student Ministry Christmas Outreach
Last weekend, twenty-eight students with 6 leaders personally extended an invitation to 56 homes in the neighboring Dexter McCarty area to join us for our Christmas service this coming Sunday. These invites were both strategically and lovingly accompanied with a box of home baked cookies to ensure the recipient of our sincerity. Now here is where you come in! Be on the lookout for new faces on Sunday, they might just be our neighbors!  ~ Clare Biggerstaff

  • Children's Ministry Christmas Program this Sunday!
Greenhouse, Orchard, and Harvest will be singing this Sunday. Please have your children line up in the Orchard hallway as soon as you arrive.
There are only classes for Seeds and Nursery on Sunday, so children’s ministry has a gift for all the kids who will be sitting in service! Please see Lisa and Megan in the back during fellowship break.

  • Student Ministry Winter Break
Our leaders are now on a much needed winter break. Preston Knifong, Joe Bryant, Thomas Slawson, Megan Wood, Joe Rodman, RaeAnn Heath, Bryan Hardin, Sue Coons, Holly Riegelmann, Elise Peter, and Kerri Bryant have all stepped up in a big way to lead student ministries during a season of transition. We so appreciate all the work they've done. High School will resume January 13th, 630-8pm and Jr. High will resume January 14th, 630-8pm.

  • The church office will be closed December 24th-28th

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc will lead us in music, our kids will perform their Christmas program, Thomas will lead our service and I will preach Mark 10:32-45. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

It was great to work alongside GBC’ers and others serving during last weekend’s Compassion mini clinic. 60 volunteers from 5 churches came together to serve 69 guests. The clinic provided: medical care, dental care, vision care, chiropractic, haircuts, and health plan assistance. Thank you for praying and for serving!

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • NEW PA OF STUDENT MINISTRY!!
I am very happy to announce that Jordan Bradley will be our next Student Ministry leader. After a lot of prayer and careful consideration, the student ministries search committee was delighted to recommend Jordan for the job. I made the offer this week and Jordan and his lovely wife Taylor excitedly accepted. Click HERE to view his resume. Jordan will start early March.

  • CHRISTMAS BRUNCH THIS SUNDAY
Oh man, it’s almost brunch Sunday. The Christmas brunch is an annual highlight. Please remember that our kids have big appetites after church and that we invite visitors to stay for the brunch following the service. All that to say, please bring bountiful dishes to share. Below are dish suggestions by last name.
    A-H – Egg Dish
    J-R – Potato Dish
    S-Z – Fruit/Pastry Dish
Please do not bring any items containing nuts or nutmeg.
**We are in need of volunteers for set up and clean up. Email Michelle Waggoner to sign up.

  • END-OF-YEAR GIVING
As 2018 comes to a close, I want to ask you to consider giving a generous gift to Gresham Bible Church. Your generosity funds God’s purposes in and through GBC and stores up treasure in our eternal 401(k). All gifts must be received or postmarked by December 31st.

  • OPERATIONS
The vision of our operations ministry is to create a welcoming environment for outsiders and a worshipful environment for insiders. Each week guys in our church show up early and stay late, setting up and tearing down. This is not a spotlight ministry so it’s easy to forget just how essential operations is to the overall ministry of the church. Please join me in showing appreciation for the men who serve us all each Sunday.

  • CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
Due to shortened class time in Greenhouse on up, memory verses can be said to Lisa or Megan immediately after service this week!
Also, our GBC kids who are in Greenhouse on up will be singing Dec 23rd! Only Nursery & Seeds will have class that day.

  • STUDENT MINISTRY

The students will then be driven by a GBC adult to the neighborhood around Dexter to hand them out. Students will be back to the study by 3pm for pickup.

Gresham Bible Church Update

About 1/3 of the Psalms are songs/prayers of lament. There is a book of the Bible called Lamentations. God expects and encourages us to cast our burdens upon him because he cares for us. The Lord also expects that even in difficult times that we will have grateful hearts. I recently read an excellent article from our friends at Eternal Perspective Ministries on "The Blessing of Gratitude, the Curse of Complaining." As we approach Thanksgiving, consider this 12 point cure for complaining. Because of God's goodness we have many reasons to give thanks.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

I really missed being with you all on Sunday. Thank you for your prayers. Like many of you, I am very grateful for the elders of GBC. They not only serve you faithfully, but they have been a pillar of support for me and my family. What you saw on Sunday during the morning gathering, and the afternoon member meeting, is what I get to have a front row seat to week in and week out. Also, props to Mike Dahl for doing an incredible job moderating the panel.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • GBC 101 on Dec 2nd 12:30-2:30pm in the Study
GBC 101 is a 2 hour class that serves as an on ramp into the life of the GBC. During the class I talk about the most important aspects of GBC and share the mission and direction of the church. Additionally, there is plenty of space to field your questions. Please RSVP to Noel if you would like to attend.

  • New-ish Addition
We rejoice with Mike and Carrie Dahl in finalization of their adoption of their daughter Evelyn. The Dahl Family would like to invite their church family to a dessert open house celebrating their adoption of Evelyn Elia.

Dec 2nd from 2-5pm at the Dahl’s home.
32751 SE Bluff Rd, Boring OR 97009
Please RSVP to Carrie at (503) 484-7732 or carriealynn@yahoo.com
  • Student Ministry – Thanksgiving Break
    No Jr. High on 11/19
    No High School on 11/25

  • Women's Ministry
Online sign ups are available on the website here.

  • Follow-up on Marriage
By God's grace we have a number of strong healthy marriages in our church. The Lord has given us lots of good examples to follow. If you are wondering who those people are, I would happy to get you paired up. Also, I wanted to remind you that GBC offers a marriage enrichment program. Sometimes Christian marriages need a tune-up. If you think your marriage would benefit from a 4-6 week individualized program, just reply to this email and we will get you set up.

  • Pressing Needs Cider Press Follow-up
We had a fantastic adoption fundraiser this year. The cider press event raised $9,550. Thank you GBC for all your hard work!

    Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc will lead us in music, Preston will lead our service and Thomas Slawson will preach James 1:19-27. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

I am very much looking forward to our member meeting this coming Sunday. We have a very full agenda. The elders are happy to speak with you before or after the member meeting about any of the agenda items, but we will not be able to allow space for questions during the meeting. Here is the agenda rundown:

  • Why member meetings matter
  • Ministry Updates (Women's Ministry and Children's Ministry)
  • Introduce 20 new members
  • 3rd quarter financial report
  • GBC calendar and scheduling
  • Deacon ministry update
  • Why and how we practice church discipline
  • Pastoral Assistant search update
  • 2018-19 GBC directory
  • Worship and Creed

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Pittsburgh Shooting
I want to commend a superb article by Russell Moore that was written in response to the deadliest attack on Jewish people in American history, If You Hate Jews, You Hate Jesus. Moore does a great job of showing how the Jewish heritage of Jesus is an important part of our redemption story.

  • Chinese Pilots
A few GBC families have spent the past few years serving Chinese pilot students in Troutdale. China is becoming increasingly hostile toward the gospel so it is a great opportunity to have them here in America for 1-2 years of training. There are a lot of students who aren't matched up with a volunteer family and we'd love to get those young men into Christian homes to experience Thanksgiving in a loving and hospitable environment. If anyone is able to welcome a few of these students to their holiday gathering, please contact Kerry and Josie Sinclair at kerry-josie@juno.com or 503-251-4779

  • Student Ministry
Middle school group is taking the next 2 Mondays off. It will resume Nov 26th. The time will also be changing to 6:30-8pm for the remainder of the school year.

  • Save the date
Dexter McCarty teacher appreciation meal – November 19th. Follow this link to sign up to bring something.

    GBC 101 – Sunday December 2nd, 12:30-2:30pm – Email Noel to RSVP
Christmas Brunch – Sunday December 16th immediately following the morning service

The next four weeks in our study of Ephesians will center on the Christian home. The first two weeks will focus on marriage. GBC holds a biblical view of marriage and gender. I recommend reading GBC's position paper on Marriage and Homosexuality as a primer.

Thank you so much for your hard work and generosity; the Cider Press was a huge success! We made a lot of cider, we raised a lot of money for adoptive families, and we had a great time working alongside each other.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Member Meeting – Sunday, November 11th 4-6pm, The Study
I am very much looking forward to our next member meeting. Lord willing, we will take in about 20 new members, you'll hear ministry updates from staff & leaders, I will share about an exciting opportunity to enlarge our flex space and we will sing together and confess our church creed. For members these meetings are a big deal. Please save the space on your calendar and make plans to attend. I trust that the meeting will be unifying and edifying.

  • Love & Respect DVD series
We have a lot of resources in the office that you are welcome to borrow, but we do eventually need them back. Presently, we have a small group that would like to use GBC's "Love & Respect" DVD series. If you by chance have it, please return it to Noel at your earliest convenience.

  • Student Ministry Team Meeting
Sunday, November 4th, 1-3pm in the Study. Pizza will be provided.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Danny Nedelisky will lead us in music, Thomas Slawson will lead our service and I will preach Ephesians 4:17-5:20. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

This coming Sunday at 3pm (in Good Shepherd's summit room) we will gather to honor, remember and celebrate the life of Bud Snavely. Our sister Sandy would of course appreciate your presence.

What is Pressing Needs?

Pressing Needs Cider Press is an annual event of Gresham Bible Church which highlights what God is doing through adoption/foster care in our community and financially supports those in the process of adoption.
