Gresham Bible Church Update

admin

Easter Sunday is the high point of our calendars. The week leading up to Easter is commonly called "holy week." During holy week believers slow down to meditate on the events leading up to the first Resurrection Sunday. I recommend using your daily devotional time or family worship time to read about and reflect on the Passion of Jesus Christ. Once again, I commend "Morning and Evening Meditations for Holy Week" by Desiring God.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

Easter Sunday is coming up fast (April 21st). Someone recently asked me why the date for Easter moves from year-to-year. Each year Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Some years that is as early as March 22nd and other years as late as April 25th. Why this date? Because it coincides with Passover which follows the lunar calendar. Jesus was crucified during the week of Passover and raised on the first day of the following week; Sunday.

We gather for worship each Sunday morning in celebration of the resurrection. Every Sunday is Resurrection Sunday. However, we mark one Sunday each year as a special holiday to emphasize and delight in the resurrection of our Lord.

This year for Easter Sunday, along with the message we will baptize several new believers and a special worship choir will lead us in two songs at the beginning of our service. It's going to be a great day!

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • GBC's Summer Preaching Schedule
I am so proud of our preaching team. Over time the Lord has raised up men in our church (and brought men to our church) who are gifted to preach God's word. Thomas Slawson, Dan Stump, Dave Martin, Eric Wood, Joe Bryant, Mike Dahl, Bob Shilling and Jordan Bradley will be filling the pulpit this summer (June – August). Please pray for these men as they devote themselves to the noble yet weighty task of proclaiming the word of God.

  • GBC Blog
In an effort to keep you up-to-date with the steps that we are taking to call GBC's next lead pastor, the elders will be sharing pertinent information through our church blog. And as always, feel free to contact an elder directly if you have questions. Anthony Perez, Preston Knifong, Thomas Slawson and Joe Bryant are eager to help.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Ang Stump will lead our service, and I will preach Exodus 20:22-24:11. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

Lead Pastor Search

Thomas Slawson

In the recent church update we shared a document laying out the process for calling a new lead pastor. Several people asked what we mean in the document by “Historic Baptist Principles.” In short, historic Baptist principles include,

1. Believer’s baptism by immersion
2. The autonomy of the local church
3. Elder leadership (yes, this is historically Baptist)
4. The Priesthood of All Believers – This has been misused by some liberal/mainline Baptist denominations in the last few decades to defend some unorthodox theological positions, but it’s rooted in the Reformation. It is the conviction that every believer has a responsibility to study, know, and be accountable directly to the word of God. Knowledge and understanding of the word isn’t reserved only for the trained clergy.

I hope this helps clear up any questions. As always, the elders are available to talk if you have any questions or concerns.

-Thomas

Over 40 people showed up to hear about plans for summer events and the direction of the youth group going forward. Click HERE for a link to the information sheet that was given out regarding the two summer camps we will be involved in. If you have any questions or would like to register for an event please contact Jordan Bradley at jordan@greshambible.org or 360-241-4954.

  • Steps for Life Walk + Run

This walk + run is being held at Blue Lake Park and is a fundraiser benefiting First Image and their family programs. Please go HERE for more information or to register. You can also go HERE to watch a short testimonial video. Registration is free up until the day of the event. For day-of registration there is a fee of $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

  • Calling GBC's Next Lead Pastor
Last night the elder finalized the process for calling GBC's next lead pastor. The elders are really close to formally beginning the process. Please remember them in your prayers. (You can also join us on Saturday's for our prayer meetings. 7:30-8:30am in the Study.) Pray for wisdom and pray for a discerning heart. I also want to beseech your patience and understanding. Along with being family men, our elders work demanding jobs: electrician, project manager, creative director, development director. They are busy but will certainly serve GBC well during this season of transition.

Our Upcoming Gathering

Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, I will lead our service, and Thomas Slawson will preach James 2:1-13. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text

During tonight's member meeting I made an exciting and sorrowful announcement about my family following the call of God to plant a new church in N/NE Portland. We anticipated that many of you would not be able to attend this afternoon's member meeting, but I wanted to be certain that you heard this news directly from me so earlier this week we made a video of the same announcement given this afternoon. Click HERE to watch.

I know that this is surprising news and that you may have a lot of questions. The elders have drafted a FAQ regarding this transition. We hope that this document provides clarity concerning GBC's future and how the elders plan to lead the church moving forward.

Additionally, we (the elders) are eager to shepherd you through this transition. Please feel free to reach out to Anthony Perez, Thomas Slawson, Preston Knifong, Joe Bryant or myself. We love you all dearly and we're available to help you process this huge change in the life of GBC.

Please pray for your elders and pray for GBC knowing that God works all things according to the counsel of his will.

In Christ,
Vergil

Our dear brother and sister Kyle and Katie Cowan responded to the appeal for the placement of twin two year-old boys by opening their hearts and home to care for children in their distress. The Cowan's kindness is not due to having tons of extra space and plenty of surplus energy and time (they both work and have 4 bio children). They have inconvenienced themselves and taken on emergency placement because the gospel of Jesus Christ compels them to do so. We rejoice over God's work in their lives.

Please pray for the Cowan's spiritual and emotional strength. Pray for the transition for their children and the two foster children in their care. And pray that GBC's orphan care will continue to adorn the gospel by serving those in need and spreading the fame of Jesus Christ.

Here is what's happening in the life and ministry of GBC

  • Daylight savings ends this coming Sunday, March 10th. Don't forget to set your clocks 1 hour forward on Saturday night.

  • Important Member Meeting this coming Sunday, 3:30-5:30pm in The Study
If you are a member of GBC or considering membership with GBC, we (the elders) ask that you plan to attend the Member Meeting. During the meeting you will receive ministry updates, we will take in new members, and talk about the direction of GBC. Snacks provided and children are welcome.

  • Homeless Resource Bags
Homeless Resource Bags are now available to pick up at the Resource Table on Sunday mornings. They contain food, hygiene items, the Gospel of John, and local homeless resource information. Two sizes are available: snack or gallon (meal) size. Please help distribute them in our community as you encounter people with a need.  And a special thanks to the Jr. High and High School youth groups for assembling them!

  • Student Ministry Parent info/welcome meeting
Parents and students please plan to join us for an informal meeting on March 24th directly after service in the Orchard room. We will get to meet Jordan Bradley and talk about what is coming up in Student Ministries. This will be about a 30 minute meeting.

  • Easter Family Worship Choir
We’ll be having a Family Worship Choir for Easter this year (April 21st). There will be two Saturday rehearsals (4/13 & 4/20, 9-11AM) in addition to receiving the music and a practice MP3 at home. The choir is open to children in the Sprouts class on up. Children under 12 years old will need a parent/guardian to join with them. For more information and to sign up online, follow this link.
Sign up sheets are also available at the Children’s Ministry Check-In table and the Resource Table at church. Sign-ups need to be submitted by March 17th.

  • GBC August Family Day
Flexibility and diversity are values we like to champion at GBC. We know the church camp out is a favorite event of the year, so why are we doing a one-day event this year instead?

    1. We’ve had a difficult time finding a location that can accommodate those with accessibility needs.
    2. Putting together a camp out every year requires a lot of coordination and volunteers. Conscious of the time and high amount of volunteers that are needed we would like to move the camp out to every other year.
    3. A whole weekend away for a family costs more than a one day event.

At GBC we want to be inclusive of those that have accessibility needs and be conscious of the time and cost it takes to put together a camp out. This year, GBC is planning a One-Day Family Event. We'll have many of the same types of activities that we’ve grown to love about the camp out: kid’s activities and games, group games, hang out time, dinner together as a church, a worship service, and a talent show. It will just be one day instead of a whole weekend. Thank you for being flexible as we try something different this year. And we look forward to alternating these events going forward!

We are putting together a committee to pull off this new and fun event. If you would like to be involved please contact Noël Rodman.

    Our Upcoming Gathering
Lord willing, Marc Peter will lead us in music, Amy will lead our service and I will preach Exodus 13:17-15:21. Please pray for our gathering, read over the text
